What is oral and maxillofacial surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a dental specialization that treats diseases, defects and injuries in the mouth, jaws, face and head, including the teeth and gums. Tooth extractions fall into this category, including removal of impacted teeth. Dental implants and bone grafting are other common examples of oral surgery.

Do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?

Not always. Wisdom tooth removal is typically only performed when the wisdom teeth are impacted or cause issues such as crowding and misalignment or pain. Dr. Huang will be able to tell following your evaluation if wisdom tooth removal is a good idea.

What is alveoplasty?

Alveoplasty is a procedure that repairs or reshapes the tooth sockets, or dental alveoli. When one or more teeth are extracted, the pockets have high and low spots that can wind up causing discomfort or other issues. Alveoplasty addresses these spots, smoothing them out so they won't cause these issues.

What is TMJ?

Sometimes also referred to as TMD, TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint disorder, and it refers to a condition where the jaw and bite pattern do not line up properly. TMJ can cause problems like headaches, neck and jaw pain, jaw “locking” and clicking, bite problems and other issues. Tooth grinding and clenching are often associated with TMJ. Today, there are many treatments for TMJ, including surgery, orthodontic treatment, and mouthguards.

How is oral surgery performed?

Dr. Huang uses the most advanced techniques for safe results and minimal discomfort. In addition to local pain relief injections, oral medication may also be prescribed for patients with considerable anxiety, and some procedures are performed under sedation so patients can sleep through the entire visit. Dr. Huang will discuss ll your options during your evaluation.
