Periodontics Q & A
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is another term for gum disease, and it refers to the condition that can develop when plaque and tartar are allowed to build up at the base of teeth and below the gum line, providing an ideal place for bacteria to grow and multiply. Over time, this bacterial production produces toxins that cause the gums to pull away and recede from teeth, eventually weakening tooth roots and leading to tooth loss. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults in America.
What are the signs of gum disease?
At first, gum disease may cause few signs; most notably bleeding when you brush your teeth. Eventually, it can cause gums to become red, puffy and tender, and left untreated, an infection can occur beneath the gum line, often causing considerable tenderness in the gum area. Loose teeth are the final sign of gum disease before tooth loss occurs.
How is gum disease treated?
Treatment begins with a thorough exam and evaluation to determine how far gum disease has progressed. Many cases of gum disease can be treated with scaling and root planing, two in-depth treatments that help treat bacteria and plaque below the gum line and in the root pocket. Antibiotics may also be used, orally or injected into the root area, to help kill bacteria. Laser surgery or traditional gum surgery may also be needed to prevent further disease, and in the most serious cases, bone grafting may be required to replace bone that has disintegrated as a result of infection.
How can I prevent gum disease?
Regular and proper brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups are the best ways to keep gum disease at bay. Ask your hygienist to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to help ensure you stay protected between exams.
